GOVAN GRAVING DOCKS TRUST
After a long history at the centre of Glasgow’s maritime industry, the Govan Graving Docks closed in 1987. As the last remaining graving docks in the city, it is of great importance to Glasgow’s story and has been described by Historic Environment Scotland as “an outstanding graving dock complex without parallel in Scotland.”
There has been little investment in the site since closure of the Docks. The quay walls and revetments have deteriorated, areas of the historic dockyard are beginning to subside, and several open pits mean that there is no safe public access.
The Govan Graving Docks Trust was established by members of the community in 2024. The Trust is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SC053522) The constitution can be viewed here.
The Trust is working to bring a large part of the Docks into community ownership and to oversee sensitive redevelopment of the site. A first phase of work will start on site in 2025. This will restore safe public access and deliver a new recreation and events space that can be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area. In the future the Trust hopes to support further development of the site including construction of a new bridge connection to Glasgow Science Centre and the provision of facilities to support recreational use of the river.
